KMC Golf Society – “Serious Fun for the Serious Golfer…!!!”

The History

Well in 1999, a group of friends started playing golf on a regular basis. What surprised us was that the more and more golf we played, the more and more friends and acquaintances we kept bumping into. It seems that a lot of people were “closet golfers”. Later on in that same year we decided to hold a tournament. To be honest a number of us had reservations about the number of people we could get. We expected 10-12 people would take part. On the day of the tournament 30 golfers turned up.

They were friends of friends, they were relations and cousins, and there were quite a few surprises. It turned out to be a great day and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. So much so that we decided to hold a second tournament that year and, again, we had over 30 people attend. It was at that point that we realised that the formation of a golf society would be possible.

In December 1999, letters were sent out to ask friends and relations if they would like to apply to join the newly formed KMC Golf Society. A general meeting was held, a committee selected and a constitution written. What’s in the name!! When we started, we kept being asked how the name KMC was derived and what it stood for. The story starts when invitation letters were being prepared for sending out to prospective members. We obviously needed a name but just could not agree on a good name.

Candidates such as “Friends Golf Society” were rejected for obvious reasons. Eventually we decided to select KMC whilst we thought up a better name.
